Can you Freeze Cheese?

By

Freezing Cheeses

Freezing cheeses produces a good result with certain varieties of cheese, such as cheddar cheese and Manchego cheese. These delicious and flavorful cheeses are aged cheeses and will further benefit from continuing the aging process. Freezing cheeses does not work well with Ricotta cheese.

Cheese Freezing Steps

When choosing a cheese to freeze, avoid cheeses that have hard, dry edges. Look out for mold on the cheese. The cheese you plan to freeze should not have unwanted mold growing on it.

Blue cheeses-which have their blue green color due to a specific variety of mold-can be frozen, but they will become crumbly.

Freezing Cream Cheese

Avoid freezing cream cheese that is packaged in a container. This type of cream cheese does not freeze well. Blocks of frozen cream cheese can be used in cooking, for making cheese sauce and other cheese recipes.

Freezing Blue Cheese

Freezing blue cheese makes it lose its flavor. If you decide to freeze blue cheese, lay it flat in a Ziploc bag before freezing. You can also tightly wrap the cheese in a transparent wrap, such as Saran wrap.

Freezing String Cheese

Freezing string cheese may not be necessary in order to have the cheese last longer. String cheese spoils less easily than many other types of cheese. After freezing string cheese, it will keep cool when packed in kids’ lunches.

Try this recipe for cheese stuffed meat loaves, which uses string cheese.

Can You Freeze Milk?

Freezing milk is a good way to take advantage of grocery deals. If you have a deep freeze, taking advantage of store sales of skim and low fat milk is a good idea. These types of milk freeze well.

Freezing gallons of low fat milk in plastic containers in your deep freeze will keep them easily accessible and save you money. Milk expands by about 9% when frozen, so make sure you plan for this by leaving some space in the plastic containers you use for freezing the milk.

Good hub because we waste so much. Quite by chance I found I could freeze the macaroni/cheese dish - I had so much during the holidays. And the cheese remained perfect.

And really good tip about leaving space in milk containers to allow for expansion. Practically every refrigerator comes with a freezer - why not use every inch.

Great info and rated up!

Great tips on freezing cheese. Around here, though, it never lasts long enough to warrant freezing, haha!

Useful know-how. I often makes ice-cream with just banana and milk, and it turns out well. That'd explain why milk can be frozen.
